The documentation also notes that AI features are covered by an OpenAI API opt-out, so content sent to OpenAI is not saved to its servers or used for model training.

Speechify

Its privacy policy (updated July 22, 2026) is worth reading closely. It discloses extensive third-party tracking infrastructure: Google Analytics, Google Optimize 360, Hotjar, Amplitude, Segment, Meta Pixel, Google Global Site Tag, Bing Universal Event Tracking, and TikTok Conversion Tracking Pixel, alongside cookies, tracking pixels, and web beacons. The policy states that Speechify does not sell or rent personal data and does not share personal data to enable third-party ads.

On content handling, the policy says saved User Content is stored locally on your device and synced with Speechify's servers, which are located in the United States, and that device and usage data are logged automatically.

The honest framing for all three: these are good products whose trade-offs are documented in their own policies. The question isn't whether they're competent. It's whether you accept a server-side profile of your reading life in exchange for convenience.

Foliate

Foliate is an open-source EPUB reader that gets privacy right in a way worth praising.
